Multinational Enterprises, GVCs, and India’s Export Competitiveness: Theory, Evidence and Policy
Abstract:
FDI inflows are expected to help their host countries expand their exports by integrating them with the global value chains of multinational enterprises (MNEs). This GVC integration has been behind the success of a number of developing countries in the export markets. This lecture will explore the theory and evidence on the role played by MNEs and FDI in India’s export competitiveness. The lecture will review evidence from inter-country as well as intra-country studies on FDI and export-competitiveness. What factors and policies help a host country benefit from the resources of MNEs for export-orientation? The lecture will conclude with policy lessons for leveraging FDI, including outward FDI, for enhancing India’s export competitiveness.
