About the Workshop:
The National Research Programme on Plantation Development (NRPPD)at the Centre for Development Studies, in collaboration with Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development and the Department of Geography, Sikkim University, announces its third annual, Seven‐day residential research capacity‐building workshop on the theme ‘Plantation and Development’. The capacity‐building programme aims to enhance socio‐economic research on plantations in India. The plantation economy in India is undergoing vast changes in its production and consumption with value‐added production and niche varieties becoming norms. The estate model of production is giving way to small and marginal growers. Technological change in agricultural practices and marketing is promising more efficient production, while climate change and local weather unpredictability are new challenges on the rise. Livelihoods fully dependent on plantations are becoming challenging. The increasing complexities in the plantation sector need a renewed thrust on research in these areas. This programme would cull out approaches and methods to conduct in‐depth research on the issues raised above.
