Topic: Beyond Numbers: Transforming Math Learning in Government Schools
Ms. K.Vaijayanti, Director Research and Evaluation, Akshara Foundation

Abstract:

Delivering quality education in India remains a significant challenge despite increased school  enrollment under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) initiative. To address gaps in math education for grades 1–5, the KKA model was developed, integrating a constructivist approach that enhances conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. This model provides teachers with effective pedagogical tools, in-person and digital training, and structured implementation within government schools. A robust data collection system enables targeted interventions, while community engagement fosters accountability through initiatives like local math contests. This paper explores the enabling environment required for sustainable education reform, emphasizing pedagogy, digital learning access, innovative assessment methods, and long-term commitment to transforming math education at scale.
