Title of the Webinar: Diffusion of Digital payments in India, 2011-12 through 2020-21, Role of its sectoral system of innovation
Presenters: Professor Sunil Mani and Dr Chidambaran G. Iyer
Moderator: Professor Ram Singh, Delhi School of Economics
Abstract: The demonetization of November 2016 was a major epoch in India’s recent economic history. This was followed by another important event in July 2017 with the adoption of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Both these events paved the way for the diffusion of digital payment systems in the country. The recent pandemic with the requirement of social distancing is expected to accentuate the move towards a digital economy. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the trends in the diffusion of a digital payments system in India and the contributions played by its Sectoral System of Innovation (SSI). We decompose the SSI into its three building blocks namely the actors and institutions, the knowledge domain and demand in attempting to explain the innovations in digital payments.
