Abstract: The recent growth of technology-based startups in India and their concentration in metropolitan cities has rekindled the discussion on the spatial dimension of innovation and need for balanced regional development. This study is an attempt to understand the emergence of startups in India and the factors driving their location. Our results indicate the significance of different factors including access to financing, innovativeness of the region and industrial diversity in determining the emergence of startups. An area scarcely studied in the Indian context, this gives scope for further research on India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and serves as a preliminary template for government policy.
