Abstract:
We explore the relationship between migration and COVID-19-related employment vulnerabilities for Kadakkavoor panchayat in Trivandrum district. Drawing data from a primary survey spanning across the Census of the panchayat in two rounds, we use an ordered probit model to study how migration status is associated with job loss and income loss. We find that current migrants are less vulnerable to job loss and income loss than non-migrant households. In contrast, return migrants are more vulnerable than non-migrant households. We extend the above finding by studying migrants that returned during the pandemic and by contrasting UAE migration with other migration destinations.
