Abstract
This talk is an attempt to re-read the early twentieth century poet Muthukulam Parvathy Amma (1904-1977) from another time, that of the present. Her work presents the possibility of discovering the tensions in the writing of the first generation women writers of early twentieth century Malayali society. Along with this, it is important to recognize the unique presence of spirituality and nature in her poetry. It is necessary to attempt to recover the umbilical connections between the deeper, humane liberatory potential of her poetry with these features, which have been rendered invisible in progressive- ‘Renaissance’-oriented readings, through an exploration of its narrative devices and aesthetics. The talk also dwells upon the manner in which she was recognized as a public figure intervening in social issues and finally, it reflects on how she was placed in the history of Malayali women’s creativity or genius.
