Demographic Transition, Migration and Implications for Kerala Economy
ILO-CDS Dissemination Workshop “Consultation on Demographic Transition, Migration and Implications for Kerala Economy” organised by the ILO, Kerala State Planning Board, Centre for Development Studies and Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development was held at Mascot Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram on May 14, 2018.
In the inaugural session, Prof Sunil Mani, Director CDS, delivered the welcome address along with setting the context of the workshop. This was followed by the inaugural address by Dr V.K. Ramachandran, Vice Chairperson, Kerala State Planning Board. Prof S. Irudaya Rajan, Professor CDS and Mr Igor Bosc, Work in Freedom Programme, ILO DWT for South Asia and Country Office for India delivered the opening remarks. The session concluded with a Vote of thanks by Prof U.S Mishra, Professor, CDS.
This was followed by a Technical session on Demographic Transition in Kerala and Its Impact on Migration. Papers presented included a paper on Demographic Dynamics and Labour Force in Kerala by Dr.U.S. Mishra, Professor, Centre for Development Studies; Trajectory of Migration from Kerala and Emerging Challenges by Dr. S Irudaya Rajan, Professor, Centre for Development Studies and Labour Migration to Kerala: Evolving Trends and Patterns by Dr. Benoy Peter, Executive Director, Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development.
In the afternoon there was a Panel Discussion on “Managing the Impact of Evolving Trends in Migration on Kerala Economy: The Way Forward.”
