Doctoral Programme in Economics

Launched in 1975, the PhD Programme in Economics offers registration under the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Kerala.

Approach

The programme has a strong orientation towards development studies with a core economics   component. The studies cover areas such as agrarian change and transformation, economic history, health, socio-economic security, industry, labour, gender, population studies, environmental economics, macro-economic issues, technology and trade.

Programme Management

Scholars are expected to complete their theses within a period of four years. Doctoral  registration and fellowship are granted per semester.  Registration at CDS will cease at the end of six years, beyond which CDS facilities will not be available.

During the first semester, the scholars shall work under the guidance of a mentor panel of faculty members with research interests in the intended area of the PhD study, to fine-tune their study proposals. By the end of the first semester, scholars are required to present a definitive research proposal delineating the objectives, scope, methodology, and work plan. They are also to indicate their preferences on the supervising faculty.

The CDS Faculty Committee shall approve the topic and assign the supervisors after due process. The scholar shall thereon work as per the scheme and plan approved and monitored by the supervisors.

The progress of studies will be reviewed each semester by a Doctoral Committee chaired by the Supervisor; extension of registration / fellowship is based on the review report by the Doctoral Committee.

Scholars are encouraged to enhance their research acumen through interaction with academic fraternity in India and abroad. CDS will also provide them financial assistance for presenting research outputs at major conferences and seminars in India.

Admission Ceiling

Each year’s intake is determined by CDS based on doctoral fellowships for the year and availability of CDS resources.

Fellowships

Doctoral Fellowships are available under schemes like the ICSSR Institutional Fellowships, CDS Endowment Fellowships and Govt. of Kerala fellowships for SC/ST scholars. 
  • Scholars can  avail of JRF and RGNF of the UGC through CDS.
  • Teachers from colleges/universities will be considered under the salary protected fellowship scheme of the ICSSR with tenure of two years.
Admission Eligibility
  • MPhil Degree with FGPA of at least  6.0 on a 9-point scale AND a 
  • Master's degree in Economics with at least 50% marks or in related disciplines in development studies, with at least 55% marks.

 In exceptional cases those without an MPhil may be considered on the basis of research experience, of at least two years in a University/ Research Institution, as evidenced by research papers and/or research publication(s) in refereed journals.
  •   Such candidates may be required to undergo selected modules  of the the MPhil Programme coursework.
