Inauguration of new Academic Year (2018-19)

The inauguration of the new academic year 2018-19 was held in the Baker Auditorium, CDS at 2.45 pm on 1 August 2018. Prof Sunil Mani, Director briefly spoke on the previous batches of the MA, MPhil/PhD programmes at the Centre. A self-introduction by the new students and by the faculty, staff and students followed. Prof Mani outlined a fairly detailed history of the CDS from its inception to the present, mentioning academic highlights as well as the fact that CDS alumni have managed to hold positions of repute in the academia.

The formal inauguration of the session was carried out by Dr Thomas Isaac, Finance Minister of Kerala. Welcoming Dr Thomas Isaac, Prof Mani described him as a great friend of CDS, who was a student, a faculty member and at present an honorary fellow of the CDS. Dr Thomas Isaac recollected his association with the Centre and how this had influenced him in his academic career. He also recollected the times spent with Prof KN Raj, Prof Gulati, and distinguished personalities like Prof Joan Robinson. His advice to the new students was to make use of this vast opportunity that the CDS has to offer to them.

This was followed by an interactive session with the faculty and students of the CDS.
